Verstappen extends Red Bull contract until 2030

Max Verstappen, a four-time world champion, has signed a new contract with Red Bull, committing him to the team until the end of 2030. This agreement aims to conclude discussions regarding the Dutch driver’s future, as he had been linked with potential transfers to other teams such as Mercedes or McLaren.

Verstappen’s previous contract was set to expire at the end of 2028. However, it contained clauses that would have allowed him to leave after the current Formula 1 season if he chose to do so. The new deal was announced ahead of his final home race this weekend, as the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort is scheduled to be removed from the calendar.

Verstappen’s commitment to Red Bull

The 28-year-old driver expressed his satisfaction with the team, stating, “We have the best people and I’m excited to keep working together with everyone to get back to the top again.” He added that the team feels like a “second family” to him and that he feels “very at home.” Verstappen highlighted their shared achievements, including winning four World Championships together.

Despite a challenging start to the season under new regulations for cars and engines, Verstappen has decided to remain with Red Bull. His best results this season have been two second-place finishes in the Austrian and Hungarian Grands Prix. Last season, he came within two points of winning the world title against McLaren’s Lando Norris, following a significant comeback from a 100-point deficit in the second half of the season.

Verstappen’s decision comes even though his race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, is set to join McLaren by 2028. The driver’s renewal statement also included praise for team principal Laurent Mekies, who took over in July after former boss Christian Horner was dismissed.

“Getting to work with Laurent now for over a year has also been great, I see a clear vision he has for the team,” Verstappen commented. He also noted that everyone at Red Bull’s base in Milton Keynes believes in the team’s direction and he looks forward to competing for more victories and championships.

Team’s perspective and future outlook

Laurent Mekies emphasised the significance of retaining Verstappen, calling it “fantastic news” to keep “the best driver on the grid.” He praised Verstappen’s “uncompromising competitiveness, relentless determination and the courage to challenge convention,” stating that his impact on the team has been “transformational.”

Mekies added that the decision to continue their partnership is based on the trust built over many years and Verstappen’s confidence in the team’s people, culture, and vision for the future. He described their relationship as one of Formula 1’s greatest success stories, forged through championship wins, intense battles, and challenging moments.

Verstappen began his F1 career in 2015 with Red Bull’s junior team, then known as Toro Rosso. He was promoted to the senior team after four races in his second season, 2016, where he immediately secured his first race victory. He has since accumulated 71 Grand Prix wins and four world titles, placing him third in all-time F1 race victories, behind Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher.

While the new contract extends until 2030, it is understood that mechanisms exist within the agreement that could allow Verstappen to leave if performance expectations are not met. Such clauses are considered standard practice in F1 driver contracts, though the specific details are not publicly disclosed.

This season, Red Bull has faced difficulties with the new regulations, while Mercedes has shown strong performance. Verstappen is currently sixth in the world championship, trailing title leader Kimi Antonelli by 110 points.

Verstappen has been vocal about his dissatisfaction with the new engine regulations, which he believes place too much emphasis on energy management. However, his renewed commitment to Red Bull demonstrates his faith in the team’s ability to improve, despite his public frustrations with the car’s performance this season.

The announcement of Verstappen’s extended contract confirms his continued commitment to Formula 1, even after a year where he publicly questioned the sport’s direction. The focus of the driver market is now expected to shift towards Fernando Alonso and his potential extension with Aston Martin.
