The EES, aimed at streamlining passport checks and monitoring visa-free travelers’ duration in the EU, faltered around 11am. Passengers reported hours-long waits as the system struggled to process biometric data such as fingerprints and photographs. “Governments across Europe are attempting to roll out a half-baked IT system in the middle of the busiest travel season of the year,” said Neal McMahon, Ryanair’s chief operations officer. “Passengers are paying the price, being forced to endure hours long passport control queues and in some cases, missing flights.”

By midday, the issue had been resolved, but not before significant disruption ensued. Ryanair confirmed that all passengers who presented at the boarding gate before departure were accommodated. However, many others were left frustrated and confused.

This incident highlights broader concerns regarding the EES implementation during peak travel seasons. Ryanair has urged EU governments to suspend the system until September when travel volumes typically decrease. McMahon pointed out that “the solution is simple and already provided for under EU law (EU Reg. 2025/1534) – Governments should suspend EES until September just as Greece has done.”

The situation not only affected flights to Edinburgh but also had implications for other destinations outside the European Union. Observers note that similar border control issues could arise again if proper adjustments are not made.

The EES aims to replace traditional passport stamping with a digital record for travelers. Yet, its current execution raises questions about efficiency and passenger experience during busy travel periods.
