As of December 2025, thousands of civil servants are grappling with financial uncertainty due to Capita’s inability to process pension payments. The administration of the Civil Service Pension Scheme has become a source of distress for many, with the situation escalating rapidly.

Since taking over the scheme, Capita has struggled to deliver on its promises. By mid-2026, approximately 86,000 individuals have faced delays in receiving their pension payments. Many retirees are left waiting for their first payment since December 1, 2025, while an alarming volume of calls to Capita’s service peaked at 25,000 per week.

Every month, around 3,000 civil servants retire. For them, the failure to receive timely pension payments translates into serious financial hardship. Lisa Blundell, a representative of the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS), expressed the urgency of the matter: “People are not getting their pension. People are struggling to pay basic bills and get by day-to-day. How is any of that not urgent?”

The situation has drawn sharp criticism from MPs. Anneliese Midgley stated succinctly, “Capita’s management of the Civil Service pension scheme has been an absolute shambles.” This sentiment echoes through the halls of Parliament as lawmakers demand accountability from Capita regarding these administrative delays.

The government’s response included offering interest-free “hardship loans” for those most affected by this crisis. However, many feel that such measures are insufficient given the scale of the problem. Fran Heathcote remarked on the broader implications: “This is yet another hammer blow to members’ confidence in the administration of their pensions.”

Capita has committed to addressing these issues and reducing backlogs. A spokesperson stated, “We have been working together with the Cabinet Office over several months to reduce the backlog and are taking all necessary steps to address this.” Yet, no clear timeline for resolution has been established.

The ramifications of these administrative failures extend beyond individual hardships; they threaten public trust in governmental institutions managing public sector pensions. As the CSPA continues its advocacy efforts for affected members, stakeholders watch closely for any signs of improvement in Capita’s operations.
