The company’s final tally showed 154 standalone locations closed. This decision came after Claire’s collapsed into administration in January 2026 due to fierce competition from online retailers like Amazon and TikTok.

“All store employees have been advised of redundancy,” a spokesman for Kroll stated. The closures include stores in Essex, affecting towns like Braintree, Chelmsford, and Romford.

Despite these closures, Claire’s retains a foothold through its 356 concession outlets within Asda stores. However, the UK arm has paused its website, leaving customers unable to purchase products online.

Founded in Chicago in 1961, Claire’s entered the UK market in 1996. It quickly became a go-to destination for fashion accessories aimed at young shoppers. Yet, as sales dwindled, the brand struggled to keep pace with changing consumer habits.

Kroll is currently exploring options for some of the vacated sites. “We understand an interested party is in discussion with a number of landlords with a view to taking new leases for some of the sites,” they revealed.

The future of the Claire’s brand in the UK is unclear as officials have not confirmed any plans for revival. The retail landscape continues to evolve, leaving many wondering what will fill the gaps left by these closures.
