“Congratulations to Vijay sir for achieving such a big victory and impact in his first election,” said fellow actor Sivakarthikeyan as the news broke. On May 4, 2026, Actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) made a remarkable entry into Tamil Nadu’s political arena, leading in 110 of the 234 constituencies and challenging the dominance of traditional parties like DMK and AIADMK.

As the counting progressed, it became clear that TVK had captured the imagination of voters, securing an impressive 34.72 percent of the vote share—about 1.18 crore votes. The ruling DMK trailed with approximately 24 percent, while AIADMK garnered around 21 percent. This shift marked a significant change in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.

Vijay contested from two constituencies—Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East—and was leading in both. In Tiruchirappalli East, he maintained a margin of 6,499 votes at the end of the first round of counting. His campaign resonated with promises like a monthly assistance of Rs.2,500 for women under 60 years old, excluding beneficiaries of existing schemes.

The voter turnout reached an unprecedented 85.1 percent, the highest in Tamil Nadu’s history. TVK’s performance cut across urban centers and rural areas alike, even penetrating traditional DMK strongholds. K Annamalai expressed his sentiments saying, “I am happy to see that in my land, people have risen in one voice and spoken – no to buying of votes, no to dynastic politics, and yes to a generational shift in politics.”

With TVK leading in 110 seats while AIADMK was ahead in 62 and DMK in 61 seats at one point during the counting process, it was evident that voters were eager for change. As TVK workers began celebrating outside the party’s headquarters in Chennai, it became clear that this election was more than just numbers; it was about a new narrative for Tamil Nadu.

The election results indicate that voters are ready for alternatives to the long-standing Dravidian parties’ duopoly. With TVK winning 31 constituencies, while DMK secured 21 seats and AIADMK managed 10 seats, this electoral shift could redefine political alliances moving forward.

This election marks not just a debut but potentially a new chapter for Tamil Nadu politics as TVK emerges as a formidable force against established norms.
