A new weekly food waste collection service has been introduced to around 60,000 households, aiming to tackle the alarming amount of edible food wasted. Previously, residents of Wrexham faced a stark reality: approximately one-third of their household rubbish consisted of food that ended up incinerated.

Statistics reveal that the average household throws away about £800 worth of edible food each year. In a community where under half of residents recycle their food waste, this initiative arrives as a much-needed intervention. “Unfortunately, in Wrexham we’re seeing far too much food waste, and lots of it isn’t being recycled by residents,” said Cllr Terry Evans.

This new service marks a decisive moment in local recycling initiatives. With 33% of all food produced getting wasted annually, including nearly 50% of fruits and vegetables, the urgency for change is palpable. If just 25% of the currently wasted food were saved, it could feed around 870 million hungry people worldwide.

Experts have long questioned why edible food is treated as waste in the first place. The introduction of this service not only encourages better recycling practices but also promotes edible food donation. French supermarkets over 400 square metres are mandated to donate unsold edible food to charities under their Anti-Waste and Circular Economy Law—an example that some argue Wrexham could follow.

The immediate effects on households may be profound. Families will now have a structured way to manage their food waste more responsibly and potentially lessen their financial burden from wasted groceries. The community’s engagement with this initiative will be crucial for its success.

As communities like Wrexham grapple with these challenges, the hope is that they can shift towards a more sustainable model where less edible food is wasted. The journey towards effective food recycling has begun, but it requires collective effort from every resident.
