A new study reveals that excessive napping in older adults could be a significant warning sign of declining health. Conducted over nearly two decades, the research involved more than 1,300 participants aged 56 and older. The findings suggest that napping patterns—especially longer and more frequent naps—are closely tied to increased mortality rates.

Researchers found that each extra hour of daily napping correlates with a roughly 13 percent higher risk of death. Additionally, taking more than one nap per day raises the risk by about 7 percent. Notably, those who took morning naps faced a staggering 30 percent higher mortality risk compared to those who napped in the early afternoon.

Chenlu Gao, one of the study’s authors, stated, “Excessive napping is likely indicating underlying disease, chronic conditions, sleep disturbances or circadian dysregulation.” This connection raises alarms about how seemingly innocuous habits can mask serious health issues. The implications are profound for older adults who may dismiss their naps as mere fatigue relief.

The research utilized wrist monitors to track participants’ sleep behavior over an average of ten days starting in 2005. This objective measurement provided a clearer picture of individual napping patterns, revealing a link between these habits and adverse health outcomes like neurodegeneration and cardiovascular diseases.

While brief naps can immediately alleviate fatigue and improve alertness, Gao cautions against excessive napping. She emphasizes that it has been linked to greater morbidity in older populations. “Our study is one of the first to show an association between objectively measured nap patterns and mortality,” Gao adds. This highlights the clinical value in monitoring such behaviors to catch potential health conditions early.

As the population ages, understanding the nuances of sleep can play a critical role in public health. The study published in JAMA Network Open sheds light on how simple habits—like napping—can serve as indicators of overall well-being among older adults.

With these findings circulating among healthcare professionals, there’s hope that tracking napping patterns might lead to earlier interventions for chronic conditions affecting this demographic. As awareness grows, so does the need for further research into how sleep disturbances contribute to mortality rates among older adults.
