Tottenham secures key midfield target

Tottenham has reached an agreement to sign Mateus Fernandes, the Portugal midfielder from West Ham, in a deal valued at £85m. This transfer marks a significant move for the north London club, which reportedly outmanoeuvred Manchester United for the 21-year-old player. The agreed fee is guaranteed, with no additional add-ons, and is understood to surpass Tottenham’s previous transfer record of £65m paid for Dominic Solanke in August 2024.

Fernandes has been granted permission to undergo his medical examination at Tottenham. This acquisition follows Tottenham’s swift activity in the transfer market this summer, having already secured four other players. The club had previously targeted Sandro Tonali, but a bid of £80m for the Newcastle player was unsuccessful, leading Tottenham to focus on Fernandes as a primary objective.

West Ham United's Mateus Fernandes is set for medical after Spurs beat Man Utd to £85m deal Credit: skysports.com

Competition from Manchester United

Manchester United had also shown strong interest in Fernandes and actively pursued his signing. However, United maintained their policy of only acquiring players at what they deem a fair valuation and who demonstrate a clear desire to play for the club. Throughout the negotiation process, Fernandes’s preference was not explicitly clear, contributing to United’s decision not to match Tottenham’s £85m offer.

United’s decision-makers believed their stance on player valuation had been effective in the previous season, resulting in the acquisition of suitable players at appropriate prices. Despite their interest in Fernandes, United were reportedly not convinced of his strong desire to join their club, ultimately leading them to withdraw from the bidding. The Old Trafford club’s priority remains strengthening their central midfield, and they have already agreed a £35m deal for Ederson from Atalanta, though his arrival has been delayed due to a call-up to the Brazil World Cup squad.

United’s players are scheduled to return for pre-season training on 9 July. As of now, apart from Casemiro and Tyrell Malacia, whose contracts have expired, Michael Carrick’s squad largely remains unchanged from the end of last season, with no significant departures or new arrivals. Plans to sell Manuel Ugarte have been put on hold following a serious injury he sustained while on World Cup duty with Uruguay. Meanwhile, Netherlands striker Joshua Zirkzee remains at the club, and rumours regarding midfielder Mason Mount’s potential exit have been dismissed by sources.

Tottenham Hotspur stadium Credit: bbc.co.uk

Player profile and impact

Despite experiencing back-to-back relegations from the Premier League with West Ham, Fernandes has been a highly sought-after player this summer. Both Manchester United and Paris St-Germain had expressed interest in him. West Ham’s decision-makers reportedly consider Fernandes to be one of the best young players in the Premier League from the last season, with the potential to reach the calibre of Declan Rice, who was sold to Arsenal for £105m in 2023.

Those familiar with Fernandes’s playing style highlight his effectiveness as a tough tackler and his high-intensity work rate. He ranks among the top Premier League midfielders for distance covered, demonstrating his engine and commitment on the field. While he was initially seen as a more advanced player, even a number 10, by his former boss Russell Martin at Southampton, Fernandes himself views his role as a more all-round midfielder, specifically a number 8.

His time at West Ham saw him primarily deployed in a hybrid role, operating between a number 6 and a number 8. This position allowed him to showcase his defensive capabilities, tenacity, and strength, alongside his desire to be actively involved across the pitch. Tottenham’s determination to secure Fernandes, after missing out on several key targets last summer, underscores the club hierarchy’s intent to make a significant statement signing during this transfer window.

Tottenham also recently agreed a deal to sign goalkeeper Martin Dubravka on a free transfer once his contract with Burnley expires on 1 July. The 37-year-old Slovakia keeper is one of several defensive reinforcements, including Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson, both acquired on free transfers from Bournemouth and Liverpool respectively, and Netherlands defender Jan Paul van Hecke, who joined for £52m from Brighton.

By Isla Hartley — 29 June 2026 — 3 min read

Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte could be out of action for an extended period after sustaining a knee ligament injury during Uruguay‘s World Cup match against Spain. The incident occurred during Uruguay’s 1-0 defeat, which led to their elimination from the tournament.

Ugarte, who is 25 years old, was carried off the pitch on a stretcher shortly before half-time. He appeared to twist his knee awkwardly while attempting to close down Spain midfielder Pedri. The full extent and severity of the injury are still being assessed to determine the best course of treatment and the rehabilitation timeline.

The injury is a setback for Ugarte, whose career at Old Trafford has not yet gained significant momentum since his transfer from Paris Saint-Germain. He joined Manchester United in a deal worth €50m. During the 2025-26 season, he started eight Premier League matches, with only one of those starts coming in the final 16 league games for the club.

Ugarte’s last appearance for Manchester United was on 13 April, when he started in a home Premier League defeat by Leeds. Since his arrival in 2024 for a reported £50.8m, he has not consistently reached the performance levels anticipated by the club. Prior to his injury, it was widely expected that he might move on this summer, either on a permanent transfer or a loan deal.

Uruguay’s Manuel Ugarte is carried off the pitch after sustaining a serious knee injury against Spain.Photograph: Fernando Llano Credit: theguardian.com

Midfield Reinforcement Plans

The injury to Ugarte has introduced uncertainty into Manchester United‘s summer transfer plans, particularly concerning their midfield. The club had prioritised strengthening this area of the squad, with an expectation of adding at least two or three new players.

Manchester United has already agreed a £35m deal for Atalanta‘s Ederson. However, plans for the 26-year-old to undergo his medical before the start of pre-season training on 9 July were postponed. This was due to Ederson receiving a late call-up to Brazil‘s World Cup squad. The intention now is for Ederson’s medical to take place after Brazil‘s campaign concludes, followed by a mandatory three-week rest period before he reports to Carrington.

The club had also shown interest in Elliot Anderson but withdrew from discussions. This decision was made after the transfer fee and wages required to sign him from Nottingham Forest became clear. Talks with West Ham regarding Portugal international Mateus Fernandes have not yet resulted in an agreement on a fee, with Tottenham also reportedly interested in the former Southampton player.

Other Midfield Targets

Manchester United also holds a positive view of Bournemouth‘s Alex Scott. Scott was among four players who travelled with England for their pre-World Cup training camp, although he was not ultimately selected for Thomas Tuchel‘s squad. Additionally, United had a bid for Cameroon international Carlos Baleba turned down by Brighton last summer.

The potential impact of Ugarte’s lengthy injury on the financial resources available to Manchester United for acquiring new players remains to be seen. Uruguay‘s football federation stated that they would continue to work together through the evaluation process to confirm the full extent and severity of the injury.

Midfield Reinforcements and Transfer Strategy

Manchester United are actively working to secure their second transfer deal of the summer window, with a focus on strengthening their midfield. The club has already reached an agreement with Atalanta for the transfer of Ederson, who is expected to complete his move after the conclusion of the World Cup. Initial discussions suggested Ederson might undergo his medical in the United States during the tournament, but this is no longer the plan.

The club’s pursuit of midfield targets is influenced by a directive from co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe to avoid overpaying for new signings. This approach comes as Casemiro is set to leave at the end of his contract, and Manuel Ugarte is also considered for an exit. Ugarte recently sustained an injury during Uruguay’s match against Spain, which could affect his potential move.

United are reportedly facing challenges in their pursuit of West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes. While talks with Fernandes’ representatives have progressed positively, and he is said to be keen on a move to Old Trafford, United are reportedly unwilling to meet West Ham’s valuation of £85m. This situation has opened the door for Tottenham, who are reportedly prepared to meet the asking price, potentially with a significant portion of the fee structured as add-ons. Fernandes is also reportedly open to joining Tottenham, influenced by manager Roberto De Zerbi.

The club is also considering alternative midfield targets. Alex Scott of Bournemouth is another player being looked at, though Bournemouth are currently insistent that he is not available for transfer. His manager, Marco Rose, views him as a key player for the team. Should Scott become available, his reported £70m price tag could be further increased by interest from Arsenal. Additionally, Brighton’s Carlos Baleba is seen as an attainable target, despite Brighton’s history of demanding high fees for their players.

Given the transfer landscape, United may need to either increase their spending for top-tier targets or consider players in a lower price bracket. One such option is James Garner, who had a strong season for Everton. Garner, a product of the United academy, was sold to Everton for £9m. He recently signed a new four-year contract and is valued at approximately £39m by Transfermarkt, but a return to United could cost around £60m due to current market inflation.

Attacking Options and Player Exits

Beyond the midfield, Manchester United are also evaluating options for their attacking line, particularly on the left side. The club is monitoring West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville, who is on a shortlist of approved targets identified by the data department. While West Ham maintain they do not need to sell their key players, they are considered accessible by other Premier League clubs. United are looking to sign either a left forward or a left back, but likely not both.

The team is also exploring options for a new striker to alleviate the pressure on Benjamin Sesko. The aim is to bring in an experienced forward. In the past, Danny Welbeck has been considered for this role. Last summer, United successfully signed Sesko from RB Leipzig despite a slightly higher offer from Newcastle, as Sesko reportedly preferred a move to Old Trafford.

Regarding player departures, goalkeeper Andre Onana is reportedly nearing another loan move to Trabzonspor. However, the club has indicated it will not engage in discussions with Barcelona for another loan deal involving Marcus Rashford. Rashford, an academy graduate, is currently representing England at the World Cup and is expected to join pre-season training after a break following the tournament.

Viktor Gyokeres has made a significant impact at Arsenal, scoring 21 goals in his first season and drawing comparisons to Erling Haaland.

Viktor Gyokeres has emerged as a key player for Arsenal, scoring 21 goals in his debut season while facing comparisons to Erling Haaland. The young striker arrived from Sporting Lisbon amid mixed expectations, yet he quickly silenced critics with his on-field performances.

Initially, many doubted whether Gyokeres could adapt to the Premier League. His transfer from Sporting Lisbon raised eyebrows—some believed he was not ready for such a high-profile stage. However, the decisive moment came when he scored two goals and assisted another against Fulham. This performance showcased his potential and solidified his position in the starting lineup.

Since then, the impact of Gyokeres on Arsenal has been profound. In addition to his impressive tally of 21 goals this season, he became the first Arsenal player to score over 20 goals in their debut campaign since Alexis Sanchez. His ability to convert opportunities consistently has made him a focal point in their attack.

Key statistics from Gyokeres’ debut season:

21 total goals scored this season.

14 goals scored specifically in the league.

He has converted 27 consecutive penalties for club and country.

Scored a brace against Atletico Madrid in October.

Praise has poured in from all corners. Wayne Rooney remarked on Gyokeres’ efficiency, noting that “his minutes per goal, it’s right up there.” Meanwhile, Rory Smith questioned the fairness of comparing him to Haaland, stating, “I do wonder whether Gyokeres suffers in comparison to Erling Haaland because Haaland has redefined the numbers that we think count as good for a striker.” Yet, despite these comparisons, Gyokeres remains focused on his game.

In interviews, he often emphasizes the team’s spirit: “We never stopped believing”—a mantra that resonates with both fans and teammates alike. His goal celebrations have become a hallmark of his success, embodying not just personal achievement but also a collective triumph for Arsenal as they chase Premier League glory.

This season has transformed Gyokeres from a promising talent into a key figure at Arsenal. As he continues to develop and face new challenges, supporters eagerly anticipate what he will accomplish next on this grand stage.

On May 5, 2026, Arsenal will host Atlético Madrid at the Emirates Stadium as they strive to convert home advantage into a place in the Champions League final. After an impressive performance in the group stage, winning all eight games, expectations run high. Mikel Arteta’s side is eager to reach their first Champions League final since 2006.

The first leg of this semi-final ended in a tense 1-1 draw. Viktor Gyokeres and Julian Alvarez each found the net, setting the stage for a decisive second leg. Arsenal’s recent form includes a commanding 3-0 victory over Fulham, showcasing their attacking prowess and solidifying their confidence going into this crucial match.

Key statistics:

Arsenal won all eight of their group games in this year’s Champions League.

Julian Alvarez has scored 25 goals in just 41 Champions League starts.

Arsenal’s odds to win are currently set at 8/13, while Atlético Madrid sits at 4/1.

Diego Simeone’s Atlético Madrid arrives after winning their last two La Liga matches, indicating they are also in good form. The history between these two clubs adds another layer of intrigue; Atlético Madrid has faced heartbreak in three previous Champions League finals and will be determined to avoid another disappointment.

Probable line-ups:

Arsenal: Raya, White, Saliba, Gabriel, Calafiori, Rice, Lewis-Skelly, Eze, Trossard, Saka, Gyokeres and Atlético Madrid: Oblak, Pubil, Le Normand, Hancko, Ruggeri, Simeone, Llorente, Koke, Lookman, Alvarez, Griezmann.

This match will be broadcast live in the UK via Amazon Prime and HBO Max. Arsenal fans are hopeful that their team can capitalize on home ground advantage and push past a resilient Atlético side. As Arteta leads his squad into this pivotal clash, the stakes couldn’t be higher for both teams.

The outcome will not only determine who advances to the final but also signify which club can claim European glory this season. Arsenal has not reached this stage in nearly two decades; they are ready to seize this opportunity with both hands.

Alisson’s potential return to training could significantly impact Liverpool F C’s upcoming matches, especially as they prepare for a crucial fixture against Aston Villa on May 17. The goalkeeper has missed the last seven games due to injury, leaving the team scrambling for solutions.

Freddie Woodman stepped in, making his first Premier League start against Crystal Palace. His performance under pressure revealed the depth of Liverpool’s current challenges. Manager Arne Slot noted, “Ali hasn’t trained with us yet. [He is] very close to training with us.” The anticipation around Alisson’s return builds as Liverpool aims to secure a spot in next season’s Champions League.

In addition to Alisson, Milos Kerkez faced some niggles but was present at Friday’s training session. This indicates that Liverpool is cautiously optimistic about their squad depth as they approach critical matches. Dominik Szoboszlai recently expressed his disappointment after the team’s defeat at Old Trafford, stating, “Not good, as we go home with zero points.” He emphasized the need for focus, saying, “We have to be more focused, we have to take more care of the details.”

Liverpool’s match against Aston Villa is scheduled for 12:30pm BST, but it may shift to 8pm BST on May 15 if Aston Villa progresses to the Europa League final. Such changes could further complicate preparations for both teams.

The stakes are high as Liverpool navigates these challenges in their pursuit of Champions League qualification. With key players like Alisson potentially returning and others like Szoboszlai stepping up in leadership roles, fans are eager to see how this will unfold on the pitch.

During Nottingham Forest’s emphatic 3-1 victory over Chelsea on May 4, 2026, Morgan Gibbs-White sustained a head injury that has raised concerns about his availability for the crucial Europa League semi-final. The incident occurred in the 66th minute when Gibbs-White collided with Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, resulting in a deep cut above his nose.

Initially, hopes ran high as Vitor Pereira assured fans that Gibbs-White did not have a concussion. “I think not because I had a conversation with him. He’s speaking normally and remembers everything,” Pereira stated, attempting to calm fears surrounding the injury. Yet, the sight of Gibbs-White bandaged and bleeding as he left the pitch was disconcerting.

The impact of this injury reverberates beyond just one player. Nottingham Forest currently sits six points clear of relegation after their win against Chelsea, but losing a key player like Gibbs-White could jeopardize their momentum heading into the Europa League semi-final against Aston Villa. Pereira expressed optimism: “Gibbs-White has a deep cut. We’ll see but he’s a fighter; he has a strong mentality.” Nevertheless, uncertainties linger regarding his recovery timeline.

The FA’s concussion guidelines indicate that players may return to play seven days post-injury if specific criteria are met. This adds another layer of complexity to the situation. Pereira hopes for a quick turnaround: “I hope our medical department can do magic to put him in condition because he’s important for us.” However, no definitive timeline has been shared regarding when Gibbs-White might be fit to play again.

As Nottingham Forest prepares for the semi-final clash against Aston Villa, they must weigh their options carefully. The team has shown resilience this season, but without their star midfielder, they might find themselves at a disadvantage in such a critical match-up.

Derry received oxygen on the pitch before being taken off on a stretcher. Chelsea confirmed that he is conscious and talking after the incident.

Before the injury, Derry had already made an impact. His performance drew praise from coach Calum McFarlane, who noted, “Gutted for Jesse, I thought he did well in the game. He gave us a threat – a massive moment for him that has ended sadly.”

The clash resulted in a penalty for Chelsea, which was saved by Matz Sels. Liam Delap replaced Derry as a concussion substitute.

Derry joined Chelsea from Crystal Palace last summer and has been making waves in the academy, scoring 12 goals in 29 matches this season. His debut was highly anticipated—an opportunity to showcase his talent on one of football’s biggest stages.

McFarlane expressed optimism about Derry’s health: “All signs are positive at the moment so we’re hopeful he’s in a good condition.”
