The recent Russian drone attack on Chernobyl has raised alarms about the potential for another nuclear disaster in Ukraine. On that day, a drone pierced the protective outer shell around Chernobyl’s reactor No 4, which was already a site of catastrophic failure during the 1986 disaster.

Since the beginning of the invasion, Russian forces have occupied the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, where they have faced ongoing issues. In fact, the plant has experienced its 13th blackout since March 2022. Experts warn that despite all six reactors being turned off, the situation remains highly concerning.

In January 2026, the Doomsday Clock was set at 85 seconds to midnight, marking the closest it has ever been. This grim milestone reflects escalating global tensions and the persistent threat of nuclear catastrophe.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other leaders have voiced their concerns over nuclear safety. “Russia has failed to learn the lessons of Chernobyl,” said Volodymyr Kholosha, underscoring a critical point. The international community is watching closely as these developments unfold.

Experts like Alexandra Bell emphasize that we are extremely close to potential catastrophes in the nuclear space. “What we’re seeing right now is not a lack of understanding among policymakers around the world about the potential dangers; it is a lack of urgency and will to take on these challenges,” she stated.

Further complicating matters, most workers at Zaporizhzhia are from Russian facilities rather than Energoatom, Ukraine’s state nuclear company. This shift raises questions about operational integrity and safety protocols at one of Europe’s largest nuclear power plants.

Shaun Burnie warns that Rosatom must be prevented from trying to restart one or more reactors at Zaporizhzhia, stressing that any misstep could lead to catastrophic consequences. The need for international collaboration is more pressing than ever.

The unfolding situation at Chernobyl and Zaporizhzhia highlights significant nuclear risks that could affect millions across Europe and beyond. As tensions remain high, stakeholders must prioritize nuclear safety to prevent another disaster.
