A significant recall of antidepressants unfolded in the UK on April 29, 2026, after a patient discovered Citalopram tablets inside a pack labeled as Sertraline. The incident raised immediate alarms about medication errors and patient safety.

On that day, Amarox Limited, the manufacturer, swiftly initiated a precautionary recall of more than 80,000 packs of Sertraline. The company acted quickly following the report from the patient, who inadvertently received incorrect medication.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) confirmed that both Sertraline and Citalopram are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) commonly prescribed for depression and anxiety. This mix-up poses serious risks for those relying on accurate prescriptions for their mental health treatment.

The error originated during the secondary packaging process of blister strips into cartons. As a result, patients who received batch number V2500425 are advised to check their medications immediately.

Key facts about the recall:

Over 81,872 packs of Sertraline were affected by this recall.

A Citalopram dosage of 40 mg was mistakenly included in some packs.

Sertraline is typically prescribed at 100 mg.

Dr. Alison Cave emphasized the importance of vigilance: “If you have been prescribed Sertraline 100mg tablets and have received batch number V2500425, please check the carton contains the right medication.” Patients who accidentally consumed Citalopram may face heightened serotonergic side effects.

These side effects can include nausea, headache, sleep changes, and mild anxiety—symptoms that could complicate existing mental health conditions. The MHRA urged anyone affected to seek medical advice promptly.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding pharmaceutical recalls and underscores the critical need for stringent quality controls in medication packaging. With over 16.7 million prescriptions of Sertraline issued in 2019 alone, ensuring patient safety remains paramount.
