A petition advocating for legal recognition of intended parents from birth has gained significant traction, prompting a parliamentary debate in the UK. With over 110,000 signatures, this movement has captured the attention of lawmakers and the public alike.

The petition originated from Adam Frisby and Jamie Corbett, who welcomed their daughter through surrogacy in the United States. “When our daughter was born through surrogacy, we became dads the moment we held her. But under current law, the surrogate is automatically recognised as the legal mother,” Frisby explained. This situation highlights a critical gap in UK surrogacy law.

Currently, UK law mandates that intended parents must navigate a lengthy court process to gain legal recognition after a child’s birth. The Law Commission had already recommended reforms to recognize intended parents from birth three years ago, yet no action has been taken by the government since.

As this issue unfolds, it’s evident that public sentiment is shifting. “It’s exciting to see UK surrogacy laws being discussed and debated at the highest level,” said Sarah Dodds, a supporter of the petition. This growing dialogue may pave the way for crucial legislative changes.

Simultaneously, another community-driven petition is making waves across Hong Kong. Survivors of the Tai Po fire have gathered 247 handwritten signatures to demand a homeowners’ meeting regarding long-term resettlement plans after the tragic incident that claimed 168 lives. Jason Kong, one of the survivors, noted, “We’ve collected signatures from around 12 per cent of all households [at Wang Fuk Court] – more than enough to call a general meeting.”

The Tai Po fire occurred on November 26, 2025, and its aftermath has left many homeowners seeking clarity on their future. The residents delivered their petition to Hop On Management on April 29, 2026. The total number of units at Wang Fuk Court stands at 1,984, meaning they exceeded the required 5 percent threshold to convene a general meeting.

The juxtaposition of these two petitions underscores a broader trend—communities rallying for recognition and rights in various forms. As discussions continue both in the UK Parliament and among Tai Po homeowners, it remains uncertain how these movements will influence policy changes or lead to tangible outcomes for those involved.
