Just before May 1, CAFRE horticulture students completed a study tour to France, where they immersed themselves in innovative practices across the field of horticulture. The timing of their trip was particularly notable, as significant protests were set to unfold across the country on the very same day, marking a public holiday and a celebration of workers’ rights.

The students embarked on their journey through the Loire Valley, visiting cities like Nantes and Angers. Their first stop was Pépinières Lepage, a large-scale ornamental and bulb producer that annually produces around 3 million perennials and grasses. This experience opened their eyes to the scale and efficiency of commercial horticulture in France.

Next, they explored L’Institut Agro Rennes-Angers, renowned for its expertise in horticultural production and landscape design. Here, they learned about sustainable practices that blend modern technology with traditional methods to enhance productivity while respecting environmental standards.

One highlight was meeting Vincent Favreau, an organic market gardener based in Saumur. He shared his journey of establishing his organic gardening business over the past 20 years. “The area presents challenging soil conditions and variable rainfall,” he explained. Despite these challenges, he successfully supplies seasonal vegetable boxes to local customers.

During their tour, the students also visited L’Arboretum Gaston Allard, which features around 1,000 mature trees from an 18th-century collection. This site served as a reminder of the rich history intertwined with modern agricultural practices.

As May 1 approached, the atmosphere shifted. The CGT union announced plans for demonstrations against the high cost of living. Between 110,000 and 160,000 people were expected to participate in over 320 marches across major towns and cities in France. “This May 1, we are calling on all workers to protest against the high cost of living and to demand that our work be properly remunerated,” stated a CGT representative.

The juxtaposition of learning about sustainable horticulture and witnessing demonstrations for workers’ rights highlighted the interconnectedness of social issues within agricultural communities. As CAFRE students returned home with newfound knowledge and insights into sustainable practices, they also carried with them an awareness of the challenges faced by workers in the agricultural sector.

The Tour de France is also on the horizon—set to host Stage 1 in the Scottish Borders on July 2, 2027—further emphasizing the cultural significance of agriculture and community engagement in France.

On May 1, 2026, Labour Day rallies erupted globally, with workers protesting against soaring energy prices and voicing demands for solidarity in the face of an economic crisis. From the streets of Paris to the heart of Manila, trade unions mobilized thousands, uniting under a common cause.

In Argentina, workers rallied fiercely against President Javier Milei’s overhaul of labour protections. The protests were not just local; they echoed a broader sentiment felt across various nations. In Gaza, however, the situation took a different turn as Palestinian workers canceled their May Day events due to severe economic conditions exacerbated by ongoing conflict. Reports indicate that around 550,000 workers across Gaza and the West Bank currently have no income.

The backdrop of these protests is steeped in history. International Workers’ Day was first proclaimed at the International Workers Congress in Paris in 1889, following significant labor movements like the Haymarket Affair in 1886. These events laid the groundwork for collective bargaining and workers’ rights that many now fight to preserve amidst rising global tensions.

Key statistics from today’s rallies:

93 trade union organizations represented by the European Trade Union Confederation participated in various events.

Protests in France highlighted demands for increased wages due to unprecedented spikes in fuel prices.

In the Philippines, Josua Mata stated, “Every Filipino worker now is aware that the situation here is deeply connected to the global crisis.”

The European Trade Union Confederation articulated a strong message: “Working people refuse to pay the price for Donald Trump’s war in the Middle East.” This sentiment resonated widely as workers across continents expressed their frustrations over economic disparities and political decisions impacting their livelihoods.

This year’s Labour Day reflects not only a celebration of past victories but also a poignant reminder of ongoing struggles. Renato Reyes emphasized that “there will be a louder call for higher wages and economic relief because of the unprecedented spikes in fuel prices.” The collective voice of workers serves as both a warning and a rallying cry as they navigate these challenging times.

The Durham Miners’ Gala stands as a significant event celebrating workers’ struggles in North East England. It symbolizes solidarity among laborers who have fought tirelessly for their rights over decades. As Labour Day unfolds globally, it becomes clear that while challenges persist, so does the spirit of unity among workers everywhere.

“May Day is a vivid reminder that working-class politics is not a spectator sport,” proclaimed Paul Novak, General Secretary of the TUC, as he stood before a crowd in Leeds. On this vibrant day, workers and advocates joined forces to march through the streets, calling attention to the pressing issues they face.

The Leeds May Day march, organized by Leeds TUC in collaboration with Stand Up To Racism, featured a lineup of prominent speakers including Jane Aitchison and Richard Burgon MP. They rallied support for workers’ rights against a backdrop of global challenges to public services.

As participants waved banners and chanted slogans, the spirit of solidarity filled the air. This event not only celebrated the historical significance of May Day—rooted in Roman and Celtic traditions—but also highlighted contemporary struggles faced by community health workers and other essential personnel.

Key facts about May Day:

May Day has origins tracing back to Roman Floralia and Celtic Beltane celebrations.

The popularity of May Day in the UK surged during the Victorian era.

Whitelands College has hosted an annual May Day ceremony since 1881, featuring maypole dancing.

“You can fire me if you want, but I will not stop asking for better pay, and I will continue to encourage my colleagues to do the same,” shared Khady Diaga, a passionate community health worker who participated in the march. Her words resonated with many who gathered, illustrating the collective determination to fight for fair wages and improved working conditions.

This year’s event also set the stage for upcoming discussions at the Public Service Fightback conference scheduled in Spain this September. As unions across Europe mobilize—like Fórsa’s recruitment of 60,000 new members since 2018—the push for unity among labor groups remains strong.

With over 27,000 community health workers in South Africa advocating for integration into public health systems, their struggles echo those of workers in Leeds. The Leeds May Day march serves as a reminder that local actions contribute to a larger narrative of global labor movements.
