Colin Farrell stars in new adaptation of Yasmina Reza’s ‘Art’
Colin Farrell, along with Ralph Fiennes and Wagner Moura, is set to star in a new film adaptation of Yasmina Reza’s acclaimed comedy Art, directed by Fernando Meirelles. The film is expected to launch for buyers at the Cannes market.
The story revolves around three friends—Marc, Serge, and Yvan—and their escalating conflict over a plain white painting. As Serge buys a large, expensive piece that features mostly white with slightly less white lines, tensions rise. “The film follows three friends, Marc, Serge and Yvan, and one ridiculously expensive, plain white painting,” an insider noted.
This project reunites Meirelles with Fiennes after their collaboration on the Oscar-winning film The Constant Gardener. With Christopher Hampton writing the screenplay, the adaptation aims to capture the essence of Reza’s Tony Award-winning play that satirizes modern art and explores themes of friendship crisis.
Key facts:
- The play Art won the Tony Award for Best Play in 1998.
- Originally premiered in Paris in 1994 before being staged in London’s West End and Broadway.
- Colin Farrell was nominated for an Oscar for his role in The Banshees of Inisherin.
- Ralph Fiennes is a three-time Oscar nominee.
As Yvan deals with his own struggles, he finds himself caught between his friends. Their argument over the painting quickly strains their friendship. This tension adds depth to what promises to be a sharp comedic yet poignant exploration of relationships.
The film is produced by Charles Finch and Tracy Seaward. CAA Media Finance is representing domestic rights for this anticipated English-language adaptation. With its rich history and critical acclaim, expectations are high as it prepares to make its mark at Cannes.
