The couple was aware of travel warnings against visiting Iran prior to their trip. Yet they embarked on their journey with hopes of adventure. The espionage allegations have raised concerns about their treatment within the Iranian legal system.

Craig has urged the UK government to take stronger action for their release. Observers note that several of his fellow prisoners have faced execution under similar circumstances, adding urgency to their plight.
