The England Test team is undergoing significant changes, with Brendon McCullum departing from his role as head coach. Other names mentioned are Jonathan Trott and Richard Dawson. The possibility of attracting coaches like Justin Langer or Darren Lehmann from Australia is also being considered.
The new Test coach will need to work alongside McCullum, who will remain in his role as white-ball coach. This split coaching model has historically presented challenges for England, often leading to one team taking priority due to demanding schedules. The incoming coach will also need to be comfortable collaborating with McCullum’s strong personality.
The discussion also extends to the captaincy, with the ECB suggesting a continued split captaincy model. Harry Brook is considered a likely candidate to replace Stokes as Test captain, having developed a strong working relationship with McCullum in the white-ball teams. The future direction of the England Test team, including its leadership and playing philosophy, remains a key focus for English cricket.
