An amateur cricket team from North Yorkshire is currently under investigation following accusations of cheating. The allegations centre on a fielder who is said to have clicked his fingers to imitate the sound of a ball hitting the bat, potentially tricking umpires into awarding wickets. The North Yorkshire and South Durham Cricket League has initiated a full investigation into the matter.
The alleged incidents involve Saltburn Cricket Club, specifically their second XI, which competes in Division Two of the league. One local player described the situation as the “worst case of cheating I’ve ever seen in cricket.” The club has not yet commented on the accusations.
Social media footage sparks outrage
Footage circulating on social media shows a fielder, positioned at slip, appearing to click his fingers as the ball passes an opponent’s bat. In one instance captured in the video, Saltburn’s wicketkeeper then catches the ball behind the stumps, and the team appeals to the umpire, who subsequently gives the batter out. This particular clip has garnered significant attention online, nearing five million views by Tuesday lunchtime.
The alleged tactic was initially highlighted on social media by Ben Mummery, who identifies himself as a cricketer from Durham. His post, which included footage of a first slip fielder clicking his fingers, drew widespread outrage and prompted numerous replies featuring similar alleged instances. The post tagged various cricket-related accounts, including those associated with BBC’s Test Match Special, Sky Sports’ cricket coverage, and talkSPORT, as well as the Tailenders podcast.
One incident from a recent game, now part of the investigation, shows a batter being given out on the first ball despite a noticeable gap between the bat and the ball. The batter was seen pointing towards first slip and walking down the pitch to remonstrate with the umpire after the decision.
Further allegations and team performance
Following the emergence of the video, Rory Cotterill, captain of Middlesbrough’s second XI, alleged that two additional incidents occurred during a match between his team and Saltburn in June. His team had lost to Saltburn by 29 runs earlier in the season. Another incident involved a batter from Wolviston’s first XI who appeared confused after being given out in a separate game.
Saltburn’s second XI currently leads the 12-team Division Two league table. They have secured 10 wins from their 15 matches played this season. Statistical data from the league’s official website indicates that Saltburn’s wicketkeeper leads the league in fielding dismissals, with 34, of which 31 were catches behind the stumps. This figure places him 10 ahead of the second-ranked wicketkeeper.
Earlier in July, Saltburn achieved a 22-run victory against Shildon Railway Cricket Club. In that particular match, their wicketkeeper recorded eight catches. The record for the most catches taken in an innings at Test level is seven.
The North Yorkshire and South Durham Cricket League stated that it received a formal complaint regarding alleged incidents in a Division Two game on Saturday. A full investigation has been initiated, and no further comment will be made until the formal processes are complete.
