Milton keynes railway emergency
An emergency incident at Milton Keynes railway station on May 2, 2026, caused significant delays during rush hour, highlighting ongoing frustrations over the lack of passenger services on the newly constructed East West Rail line. All lines were blocked as emergency services responded to an incident near the railway.
The East West Rail project—aimed at connecting Oxford and Cambridge via Milton Keynes—has been a topic of discussion for over a decade. Although freight trains have been operational at the new Winslow station since late 2024, passenger services remain absent. Initially planned to commence in March 2025, these services have faced multiple delays, and no definitive opening date has been provided.
Local residents are feeling the impact acutely. Callum Anderson expressed frustration, stating, “People can see it and hear it but they can’t use it.” Diana Blamires added, “There’s fury. People came to places like Winslow thinking they’d be able to get a train to a job in London, or Milton Keynes or Oxford.” Such sentiments reflect a broader dissatisfaction with the project’s slow progress.
The delays stem from a dispute regarding whether two-carriage trains require guards—a point that has sparked tension among various stakeholders. The RMT union claims that indecision and unresolved planning issues are responsible for the hold-up, rather than their ongoing disputes. An RMT spokesperson stated, “It is simply inaccurate to blame delays to East West Rail on our dispute when the project has been held back for years by indecision, rising costs and unresolved planning issues.”
Chiltern Railways is currently working on modifications and staffing arrangements necessary for introducing passenger services. Meanwhile, the Department for Transport has stated they are supporting Chiltern Railways in getting these services running as soon as possible. Olly Glover pointed out that ultimately it is the government and the DfT who made decisions late in the process without resolving the impasse.
As of 19:00 on May 2, all lines had reopened after the emergency incident. However, with no clear timeline shared regarding when passengers might finally be able to use the East West Rail line, uncertainty looms large over this vital transport link for residents in the Oxford-Cambridge corridor.
