Nightlife: The Landscape: Mallorca vs. Liverpool

As of May 5, 2026, Mallorca’s nightlife is bracing for a further revenue decline due to dwindling local and tourist spending, while Liverpool emerges as one of the safest cities for nightlife despite ongoing safety concerns among women and the LGBT+ community.

Last year, Mallorca’s vibrant scene seemed poised for recovery after a challenging 2025. Local business owners like Miguel Pérez-Marsá expressed optimism, stating, “We were already coming off a slow year, and now the forecast is for even lower attendance and, consequently, lower revenue.” However, that optimism has faded as clubs shorten their opening hours to manage costs and focus on weekend crowds.

In contrast, Liverpool has maintained a robust night-time economy. Recent statistics reveal that 60% of people reported feeling safe walking around the city center after 10pm. This sense of security can be attributed to the city’s consistent efforts in improving nightlife safety. For sixteen consecutive years, Liverpool has held Purple Flag accreditation—an indicator of a well-managed night-time environment.

Yet, not all is perfect in Liverpool. A significant portion of the LGBT+ community—75%—still feels at risk of harassment during nights out. Similarly, 71% of women surveyed expressed fears of sexual assault while enjoying the city’s nightlife. Joe Maguire from the Liverpool BID company acknowledged this reality: “Improvements to safety can always be made; some venues do enough but some don’t.”

To address these issues, over 125 businesses in Liverpool have signed onto a night-time safety charter aimed at enhancing safety standards across venues. Clive Duffey from Ask for Clive noted the importance of creating inclusive spaces: “Our sticker is placed at the front door of venues to recognise them as an inclusive hate-free space… it’s about venues creating a culture of safety.” This initiative reflects a broader commitment to harassment prevention within the nightlife sector.

The contrasting fates of Mallorca and Liverpool highlight different approaches to nightlife management amid changing societal norms and economic pressures. While Mallorca grapples with declining tourist spending and operational challenges, Liverpool’s proactive stance on safety fosters confidence among its patrons.

As both cities navigate their unique challenges, the future remains uncertain. The path forward will depend on how effectively they can adapt to evolving expectations from their respective communities and visitors alike.
