Arsenal complete Ezri Konsa signing from Aston Villa
Arsenal have completed the signing of England defender Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa in a deal valued at £55m. The 28-year-old has agreed to a four-year contract with an option for an additional year with the Premier League champions. The agreement between the clubs was reached on Wednesday, with Villa potentially receiving up to an extra £4m in add-ons.
Konsa expressed his pride in joining what he described as “one of the best teams in the world.” He highlighted his desire to continue winning, stating, “I’m hungry to win and that’s what I’m here for.” Discussions about the move took place with Arsenal’s England players during the recent World Cup, where Konsa represented his country.
Arsenal’s sporting director, Andrea Berta, praised Konsa’s qualities, noting his athleticism, composure, and tactical intelligence. Berta stated that Konsa’s ability to play both in central defence and at right-back will provide valuable versatility to the squad, helping to maintain the high defensive standards crucial for competing for major trophies.
Konsa’s career at Villa and international appearances
Konsa joined Aston Villa in July 2019 from Brentford and made appearances for the club. Last season, he scored goals and provided assist as Unai Emery’s side secured Champions League football with a fourth-placed finish in the Premier League.
He was also part of the England squad that reached the World Cup semi-finals this summer. Konsa started every match for England up until the semi-final stage, where he came on as a 72nd-minute substitute in the 2-1 defeat to Argentina. He typically played in central defence but also provided cover at right-back, a position he has also filled for Villa.
Following the tournament, Konsa was given four weeks off by Emery and did not participate in any of Villa’s pre-season games, including their Uefa Super Cup match against Paris St-Germain.
Arsenal’s defensive reinforcements and Villa’s squad changes
The acquisition of Konsa follows Arsenal’s significant transfer spending this window, which includes midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle for £75m and winger Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge for £34m. The move comes as Arsenal faces defensive challenges, with key players William Saliba and Jurrien Timber currently sidelined due to injuries.
Saliba is expected to be out for an extended period with a back issue, while Timber is recovering from a groin problem. These absences leave Ben White as the primary fit right-back and Cristhian Mosquera as the only right-sided centre-back to partner Gabriel. The club also made defender Piero Hincapie’s loan deal permanent this summer.
Konsa’s departure marks another high-profile exit for Aston Villa this summer, as Emery’s squad undergoes significant changes. Villa has seen other key players leave, including Youri Tielemans and Morgan Rogers, who both scored in the club’s Europa League triumph in Istanbul. Rogers’ move to Chelsea was reported to be a record fee for an English player. Left-back Lucas Digne was also sold to Paris St-Germain. The club is also addressing the future of goalkeeper Emi Martinez following his failed move to Juventus and the signing of his replacement, Zion Suzuki.
Villa’s transfer activity is influenced by financial regulations, including Uefa’s squad cost ratio (SCR) and the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). The club has faced fines from Uefa for breaches of financial regulations. Reports indicate that Al-Hilal may also make another attempt to sign striker Ollie Watkins before the 1 September transfer deadline, with Villa reportedly offering him a new contract.

The changes mean that only Matty Cash, Pau Torres, Victor Lindelof, John McGinn, and Emi Buendia remain from the players who started in Villa’s Istanbul triumph.
