Bruno Guimaraes has communicated to Newcastle United his desire to depart St James’ Park and join Arsenal. The midfielder, who will turn 29 later this year, reportedly seeks to win titles, a prospect he believes may not materialise at Newcastle in the near future. His preference to join Arsenal is said to be for footballing reasons, rather than financial, despite being Newcastle’s highest earner.
Newcastle, however, are keen to retain their captain and consider him not for sale. The club has not received any direct contact from Arsenal regarding Guimaraes’ availability, with discussions primarily driven through agents. Newcastle would reportedly consider an offer if it reached a certain figure, but no such offer has been made.
Guimaraes signed a five-year contract extension in October 2023. This deal included a temporary release clause which expired in June 2024 without being activated. He has been a pivotal player for Newcastle since his arrival from Lyon in January 2022, having made 153 Premier League appearances and contributing significantly to the team’s performance, including their Carabao Cup victory in 2025.
Arsenal, who are the reigning Premier League champions, are understood to be intensifying their pursuit of the midfielder. They have indicated a willingness to pay a substantial amount for him, with a previous verbal offer reportedly rebuffed by Newcastle. Arsenal correspondent James McNicholas noted that Arsenal have long admired Guimaraes, and manager Mikel Arteta and technical director Andrea Berta are reportedly determined to secure his services this summer. Guimaraes is seen as a Premier League-ready option who could either partner or provide an alternative to Declan Rice in midfield.
Newcastle’s transfer strategy and other potential movements
This summer marks a period of significant change for Newcastle, with multiple alterations expected within the squad. The club has already seen the departures of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur. Newcastle correspondent Chris Waugh highlighted that losing Guimaraes in the same summer as Tonali would be a considerable blow, especially after the recent exits of Gordon and Alexander Isak.
Newcastle’s transfer policy focuses on acquiring younger players, typically between 18 and 24 years old. They aim to sign players within a specific price range, though they are prepared to exceed this for key targets. An example of this is the verbally agreed deal for Johan Manzambi from Freiburg, who was one of their top targets this summer. However, Aston Villa subsequently matched Newcastle’s verbally agreed deal, with Manzambi reportedly preferring Villa due to the offer of Champions League football.
The club anticipates making three or four more signings. They are also seeking a new number one goalkeeper, with a long-standing interest in James Trafford, and a full-back capable of playing on either side, preferably left-back. There is also a possibility of bringing in another winger if Jacob Murphy departs, and potentially a striker if either Nick Woltemade or Yoane Wissa leaves. If neither striker moves on, the club intends to proceed with Wissa, Woltemade, and Will Osula for the upcoming season.
Manager Eddie Howe is reportedly aligned with the club’s new transfer model, which prioritises younger players with high potential who can be developed on the training ground. This approach is seen as an opportunity to improve players like Sean Steur, Bazoumana Toure, and Manzambi. Steur, an 18-year-old signing, is viewed as a future prospect who will train with the first team but is expected to start as a substitute.
Several players could also leave Newcastle this summer. Nick Pope is expected to depart, and there is a chance that Murphy and Joe Willock could also move on. The club has not received any offers for these three players but would be open to their departures to facilitate a squad revamp. The Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) remains committed to Newcastle, providing assurance regarding the club’s financial backing.
Guimaraes was part of Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad at this summer’s World Cup, starting every match before their elimination by Norway in the last-16.
