Cape Verde makes history by reaching World Cup knockout stage on debut
Cape Verde has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the smallest nation to advance to the knockout stage of the World Cup. The team, representing a group of 10 islands in the Atlantic Ocean, will now face defending champions Argentina in the last 32.
Following their goalless draw with Saudi Arabia, players gathered around a mobile phone on the pitch to watch the final moments of Spain‘s victory over Uruguay. This result confirmed Cape Verde’s position as Group H runners-up, sparking emotional celebrations among the team and fans.
The team’s journey included an impressive goalless draw against Spain in their opening game, where 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha was a key performer, and a 2-2 draw with two-time World Cup winners Uruguay. Former World Cup winner Juan Mata commented on the team’s consistent high-level performance across three matches.
Diaspora and Strategic Planning Drive Success
A significant factor behind the Blue Sharks‘ success is the decision by Cape Verde’s Football Federation (FCF) to integrate players from the country’s diaspora. Historical emigration due to severe droughts and a strong seafaring tradition have led to a substantial population with Cape Verdean roots abroad, particularly in Rotterdam.
Fourteen of the 26-man World Cup squad were born outside Cape Verde, with six originating from the Dutch port city. Forward Dailon Livramento, who played for Casa Pia, scored a crucial goal in their qualifying win against Cameroon.
Josina Freitas Fortes, a member of Cape Verde’s parliament, highlighted the FCF’s progress, attributing it to passion, commitment, and a clear technical plan. The recruitment of Dublin-born centre-back Roberto Lopes via LinkedIn in 2019 and the inclusion of former Manchester United winger Bebe, who previously represented Portugal at under-21 level, exemplify this strategy.
Lopes expressed the team’s inner confidence, stating that their belief in mixing with the best teams is not unfounded but stems from an ongoing plan to elevate Cape Verde among the world’s top football nations.

Head coach Bubista, a former international who took charge in January 2020, is credited for the team’s strong performances. His stable coaching approach has fostered a compact and well-drilled side known for its organised defence, technical midfielders, and skilled forwards.
Under Bubista, Cape Verde reached the quarter-finals of Afcon 2023, having debuted in the tournament 10 years prior. Their discipline was evident in the goalless draw against Spain, where they conceded only one foul, the fewest recorded by a team in a World Cup match since 1966.
Defender Sidny Lopes Cabral emphasised the team’s unity and playing style, describing it as their inherent personality. Bubista noted that beyond results, it is important for the team to showcase their identity, strength, unity, and resilience.
Bubista’s achievement in securing World Cup qualification led to him being named the continent’s coach of the year for 2025 by the Confederation of African Football. He had previously expressed confidence in his side’s potential to reach the World Cup, a prediction that has now come to fruition.
