Edinburgh: Wouter Vrancken named new Hearts head coach
Heart of Midlothian has announced the appointment of Wouter Vrancken as the club’s new head coach. The Belgian coach arrives at Tynecastle following the departure of Derek McInnes, who moved to Rangers. Vrancken’s unveiling included an interview with Hearts TV, where he expressed his enthusiasm for the role and the club’s ambitions.
Vrancken highlighted several factors that attracted him to Hearts, particularly the people and the club’s competitive spirit. He noted the strong connection he felt with the club’s leadership and staff, emphasising the importance of collaboration. He also acknowledged Hearts’ performance last season, where they demonstrated their ability to compete with the Glasgow teams, a challenge he looks forward to continuing.
Discussions with sporting director Graeme Jones and chairman Calum Paterson focused on the club’s desire to contend for top honours and challenge the dominant Glasgow clubs. Vrancken stated that the aim is to prove that success can be achieved through effective strategies rather than solely relying on financial resources. His immediate focus is on integrating his principles into the team, especially with a short preparation period leading up to the Champions League qualifiers.
Vrancken shared his positive impressions of the club’s facilities, including Oriam and Tynecastle. He described Oriam as having everything necessary for a high-performance culture, which he believes starts with the right mindset and dedicated individuals. The atmosphere at Tynecastle also left a strong impression, with Vrancken noting the stadium’s closeness to the pitch and the palpable energy, even when empty, which he finds appealing for football.
The new head coach is set for a busy start, with pre-season already in progress and a warm-weather training camp in Spain scheduled to commence. He views this intensive period as beneficial for establishing clarity both on and off the pitch, allowing players to address questions and the squad to bond away from external distractions. This time together is expected to facilitate tactical adjustments and changes for the players.
Vrancken outlined his vision for a Hearts team that plays with dominance, intensity, and aggression. He expressed a desire for his team to control possession not merely for the sake of it, but to create scoring opportunities through frequent position switches and runs. He mentioned having watched many Hearts games last year and believes the current squad, including new players, can adapt to this style of play. He stressed the team’s responsibility to generate a ‘spark’ to engage the fans and ensure full support from the stands.
Before joining Hearts, Vrancken led Sint-Truiden to a third-place finish in the Belgian Pro League last season. His coaching career includes 331 games across five Belgian clubs. He secured the Belgian Cup with Mechelen in 2019 and was a runner-up in the Belgian Pro League with Racing Genk in the 2022/23 season. Vrancken aims to challenge Celtic and Rangers for the Scottish Premiership title, building on Hearts’ second-place finish last season.
Vrancken’s decision to join Hearts was influenced by the club’s ambitions and the opportunity to manage abroad. He noted his familiarity with Hearts through his friendship with the technical director of Union Saint-Gilloise. The club’s playing style last year, its ability to compete for top positions, the stadium atmosphere, and the city were all contributing factors to his move. He sees Hearts as a club with strong ambitions, providing a clear focus for his work.
His first competitive match in charge is anticipated to be the Champions League second qualifying round first leg away to Sturm Graz, with the return leg at Tynecastle Park a week later. Players are scheduled to return to Riccarton for testing before travelling to Spain for the training camp.
Vrancken has brought two fellow Belgians, Tim Smolders and Cederique Tulleners, to join his coaching staff. Smolders previously worked as a coach at Stade de Reims and as an assistant at Schalke and Union Saint-Gilloise. Tulleners has a diverse coaching background, including roles with Cercle Brugge’s B team and as an assistant for the Lithuania under-19 and under-21 teams. The new management team will take over from Derek McInnes and his assistants, Paul Sheerin and Alan Archibald.
The club also announced two new signings: French duo Sabri Guendouz and Tom Renaud. Guendouz, a 26-year-old attacker, completed a transfer from Beerschot and signed a three-year contract. Renaud, a 25-year-old holding midfielder, joined on a four-year deal after his contract with Versailles expired. These additions bring the total number of new recruits this summer to seven, including Josh McPake, Calvin Miller, MJ Kamson-Kamara, Malachi Fagan-Walcott, and Amadou Ba-Sy. Meanwhile, Lewis Neilson has re-signed with Falkirk on a two-year deal after spending the final year of his Hearts contract on loan with them.
