Liverpool agree loan deal for Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo
Liverpool have reached an agreement to sign Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo on a season-long loan deal. The move aims to bolster Liverpool‘s defensive options, which have been impacted by recent departures and injuries.
The deal for the 27-year-old Uruguay international is a straight loan, with Araujo having signed a new contract with Barcelona last year, extending until 2031. He originally joined Barcelona B in 2018 before being promoted to the first team in 2019. During his time at Nou Camp, Araujo has played more than 200 games.
Defensive Reinforcements Needed at Anfield
The acquisition of Araujo provides crucial depth for manager Andoni Iraola‘s squad. Liverpool recently saw Ibrahima Konate depart for Real Madrid as a free agent at the end of his contract. Additionally, the club has faced several injury setbacks in its defensive line.
Joe Gomez sustained a muscle injury during Liverpool‘s initial pre-season match, and teenage centre-back Giovanni Leoni is still recovering from an ACL injury he suffered in September of last year. These injuries mean that captain Virgil van Dijk was Liverpool‘s only fully fit senior centre-back prior to Araujo‘s arrival.
Another summer signing, Jeremy Jacquet, who joined from Rennes, has also been affected by fitness issues. The 21-year-old has made fewer than 100 senior career appearances and missed the latter half of last season following shoulder surgery. He has not featured in pre-season due to a separate, minor issue.
Conor Bradley, who can play at right-back, is also expected to be sidelined for the opening months of the 2026-27 season due to a knee injury. With these absences, Araujo‘s ability to provide cover at both central defence and right-back will be valuable.
Araujo’s Role and Barcelona’s Situation
Araujo was part of Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay squad for this summer’s World Cup, though he did not make an appearance as the team exited in the group stage. His departure from Barcelona follows a period where his role at the club was reportedly set to change.
Reports indicate that Barcelona manager Hansi Flick informed Araujo that while he would receive playing time, he would not have a key role in the team’s defensive system, which Flick intends to maintain from the previous season. This discussion reportedly occurred shortly before the Liverpool loan option emerged.
The move for Araujo developed quickly, with Liverpool agreeing to cover the player’s wages. For Barcelona, Araujo‘s departure could create more flexibility to sign and register other players. However, it also leaves the club with fewer options in central defence, a position where Flick had reportedly paused further signings.
Araujo‘s career at Barcelona began when he joined Barcelona B from Boston River in his native Uruguay in 2018. He made his first-team debut the following October and has since made 213 first-team appearances for the club.
In other transfer news, Liverpool have held preliminary discussions with Paris Saint-Germain regarding the potential signing of Bradley Barcola. However, there is understood to be a significant difference in valuation between the two clubs, with the Champions League holders valuing the 23-year-old at £145m, making a deal challenging at this stage.

The loan deal for Ronald Araujo is expected to provide immediate relief for Liverpool‘s defensive concerns as they prepare for the upcoming season.
