Manchester United in talks to sign Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa
Manchester United are reportedly in discussions to sign Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. The potential transfer is understood to involve a release clause in the midfielder’s contract, which United are prepared to activate.
Reports indicate that the deal is progressing quickly, particularly following Belgium‘s recent exit from the World Cup. Tielemans is expected to travel to Manchester to undergo medical examinations, with these tests anticipated to begin soon. Following the medical, he is expected to sign a long-term contract with Manchester United.
Tielemans’ Career and Impact at Villa
Youri Tielemans joined Aston Villa in 2023 on a free transfer from Leicester. During his time at Villa Park, he has made 134 appearances for the club. He was a key part of the squad that secured Champions League qualification twice and won the Europa League last season under Unai Emery. Tielemans scored the opening goal in the Europa League final against Freiburg.
Before his move to Villa, Tielemans achieved success with Leicester, winning the FA Cup and the Community Shield. His contributions at Aston Villa have been highlighted, with some observers noting that his absence due to an ankle injury in February coincided with a dip in the team’s performance, as Villa went from winning 10 out of 13 league games to losing four of their next seven.
Tielemans is recognised for his all-round control in midfield, his effectiveness in duels, and his ability to deliver crucial passes. He is considered one of the Premier League‘s most creative players in terms of through-ball numbers. He also captained Belgium during their run to the World Cup quarter-finals, where he scored twice in five appearances, including two goals against Senegal in the last-32.
United’s Midfield Reinforcement Plans
Manchester United‘s pursuit of Tielemans comes as they look to strengthen their midfield. The club has already completed the signing of midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea. United had also been pursuing Atalanta midfielder Ederson, with a deal initially agreed upon, but this move encountered complications due to a medical issue.
Despite the setback with Ederson, United have stated that they are not ruling out revisiting the deal later in the transfer window, depending on market developments. However, Andrey Santos‘s signing is not an alternative to Ederson. The club’s focus on midfield additions follows the departure of Casemiro and an injury to Manuel Ugarte, who sustained knee ligament damage during the World Cup.
Aston Villa had reportedly offered Tielemans new terms months ago and did not wish to sell him, but the presence of a release clause in his contract has given them limited options. Tielemans is under contract with Villa until June 2028. United‘s interest in Tielemans is seen as an opportunity to add quality and experience to a key area of their squad, with the player reportedly favouring a move to Old Trafford.
Tielemans‘ experience, including captaining Belgium at the World Cup, and his composure in possession, are seen as valuable assets for Manchester United as they prepare for Champions League football and aim to improve their Premier League standing. He provided two goals and seven assists across 35 appearances in all competitions for Aston Villa during the 2025-26 campaign.

The midfielder’s arrival would add significant experience to United‘s squad, as he has 579 career appearances at club level. United continue to target Premier League talent, with Tielemans having spent eight seasons in the English top flight.
