McIlroy among early leaders
Rory McIlroy is one of five golfers sharing the lead after the opening round of the Genesis Scottish Open. The tournament, co-sanctioned by the PGA TOUR and DP World Tour, is being held at The Renaissance Club. McIlroy, playing his first event since the US Open, posted a five-under 65.
He is joined at the top of the leaderboard by Patrick Cantlay, Rasmus Hojgaard, Tom Kim, and Bernd Wiesberger. McIlroy’s round included an eagle, five birdies, and two bogeys. This performance comes three years on from winning the event.
McIlroy began his round on the back nine, bogeying his first hole. He quickly recovered with a two-putt birdie at the par-five 12th, followed by additional shots gained at the 14th and 16th holes. Despite failing to save par at the 18th, he secured an 18-foot eagle at the par-five first hole.
He noted that his driving was particularly effective, a skill he felt was also present at the US Open. McIlroy highlighted that putting the ball in play allows him to attack courses and create scoring opportunities, which he felt he achieved during the opening round.
Close competition at The Renaissance Club
The leaderboard is tightly contested, with 71 players separated by just five strokes after the first round. Among those in contention is Scottie Scheffler, who is three strokes behind the leaders. Scheffler’s round included four birdies and two bogeys, resulting in a two-under 68.
Scheffler expressed a desire for a lower score, noting that two bogeys were a setback and that he could have played the par-fives more effectively. He will be looking to defend his title at The Open next week.
Brooks Koepka is also in strong contention, being one shot off the pace alongside six other players. Matt Fitzpatrick and Tommy Fleetwood are two shots back, in a group that includes home favourite Bob MacIntyre and US Open champion Wyndham Clark.
Cantlay’s round was bogey-free, featuring five birdies. Wiesberger briefly held the sole lead before a bogey on his penultimate hole. Hojgaard also reached six under before a double-bogey on the par-four 16th impacted his score. He was the top performer in the afternoon wave after a birdie on the par-three 17th.
Course conditions and player form
The Renaissance Club has hosted the event for seven consecutive years. The course, designed by Tom Doak and constructed in 2008, is known for its links challenge and rugged terrain, designed as a tribute to Scottish golf.
The difficulty of the course can vary significantly depending on the weather, particularly the coastal winds. Past winning scores have ranged from seven-under to 18-under, influenced by these conditions. If the weather remains calm, abundant scoring opportunities are expected.
McIlroy has a strong record at The Renaissance Club, gaining 2.18 strokes per round over his career there.
His driving has been particularly effective, gaining multiple strokes off the tee in eight consecutive events. This has contributed to a runner-up finish at The Genesis Invitational, a win at the Masters, and a T7 at the PGA Championship. Despite playing in 11 events worldwide this year, his performance level remains high.
Wyndham Clark, the reigning U.S. Open champion, has also shown strong form, with four top-10 finishes in nine starts since April 1. His performance at The Renaissance Club has been consistent, never finishing worse than T25 in his four appearances.
Jake Knapp, returning from injury, previously finished T22 at The Renaissance Club. Nicolai Højgaard, who finished T14 at the Travelers Championship, has four top-five finishes this year and has performed well in Scotland, with a T4 last year and a T6 in 2023.
