Mikel Merino once again proved to be a decisive player, scoring a late goal that secured a 2-1 victory for Spain against Belgium. This win propels Spain into the semi-finals of the World Cup, marking only the second time the nation has reached this stage of the tournament. Their previous semi-final appearance in 2010 culminated in winning the trophy.

Merino’s latest heroics set up a semi-final clash with France. This upcoming match is anticipated to feature a notable encounter between Kylian Mbappe and Lamine Yamal, though Yamal is yet to make his mark at this World Cup.

Merino’s impactful return

Merino’s journey to becoming a key player for Spain has overcome challenges. Just months before the tournament, he sustained an unusual foot injury, a stress fracture that specialists had not previously encountered. This injury sidelined him from his club, Arsenal, and cast doubt on his participation in the World Cup, as he only returned to action for Arsenal a month before the tournament began.

Despite these setbacks, Merino not only secured a place in the Spain squad but has also become an invaluable asset. He previously scored in stoppage time to eliminate Portugal in the last 16, and he replicated this performance against Belgium.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente praised Merino, stating that he is an “incredible” player with many qualities. De la Fuente highlighted Merino as a standard-bearer for the team’s philosophy, expressing pleasure in having him and acknowledging his consistent presence.

Former England striker Wayne Rooney commented on Merino’s ability, noting that he is a player who consistently performs at crucial moments in significant matches. De la Fuente added that Merino’s understanding of the game allows him to excel as both a striker and a midfielder, commending his commitment and generosity.

Yamal’s tournament contribution

While players like Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Harry Kane, and Erling Haaland have been prominent figures in the tournament, Spain and Barcelona‘s young star, Lamine Yamal, has not yet reached the heights of his Euro 2024 campaign. Yamal has played six matches in this World Cup, scoring one goal.

Rooney acknowledged that Yamal, who entered the tournament with an injury, is still finding his rhythm. Despite not consistently making the final decision, Yamal’s dribbling and pace are effective in drawing defenders and creating space for teammates like Merino.

Former Spain defender Cesar Azpilicueta noted that while Yamal’s contributions haven’t translated into numerous goals or assists, he remains influential in Spain‘s play. Azpilicueta expressed confidence in Spain‘s ability to control games and recover possession quickly, suggesting that Yamal has more to offer the team.

Belgium’s challenge and Spain’s defence

Spain‘s defence has been strong throughout the tournament, with Belgium‘s goal being the first they have conceded. However, this defensive line is expected to face a significant test against a high-scoring France team led by Mbappe in the semi-finals.

The match against Belgium saw Spain dominate for periods. Fabián Ruiz scored the opening goal after a rebound from Dani Olmo‘s shot, which was initially saved by Thibaut Courtois. Belgium equalised through Charles De Ketelaere, who headed in a cross following a play initiated by Jérémy Doku and Kevin De Bruyne.

Belgium faced further challenges when Courtois was forced off with an injury, replaced by substitute goalkeeper Senne Lammens. Merino capitalised on a spilled shot from Dani Olmo, securing the winning goal in the 88th minute. This victory marks Spain‘s progression to the semi-finals.

Merino’s goal against Belgium followed similar late-game heroics, including a goal against Germany in the 119th minute of a European Championship semi-final two years prior, and a 91st-minute goal against Portugal in the World Cup quarter-finals four days earlier.

The upcoming semi-final against France will determine a place in the World Cup final.
