Newcastle appoint Matthias Jaissle as new head coach
Newcastle United has announced the appointment of Matthias Jaissle as the club’s new head coach. The 38-year-old German arrives on Tyneside following successful spells with Red Bull Salzburg and Al-Ahli. His appointment follows a comprehensive recruitment process, with Jaissle identified as the leading candidate to guide the club in its next phase.
Jaissle expressed his honour at becoming head coach of what he described as “one of the biggest clubs in European football.” He highlighted the club’s ambition, vision, and the opportunity ahead as compelling reasons for his move. He stated that his teams are founded on togetherness, hard work, intensity, and a daily passion for improvement, and he believes there is significant potential within the squad and the club as a whole.
Jaissle’s Coaching Philosophy and Track Record
Jaissle’s coaching career has been marked by his ability to develop players, construct resilient and cohesive high-energy teams, and contribute to elite performance environments. His football philosophy and leadership style are seen as closely aligned with Newcastle United‘s direction, ambitions, and culture.
At Red Bull Salzburg, Jaissle achieved immediate success, securing a domestic double in his first season. He also guided the club to the UEFA Champions League knockout stages for the first time in their history in 2022, before securing a second consecutive league title and further European progress in the UEFA Europa League. Following his departure from Red Bull Salzburg, the club has not won the league, nor reached the Champions League knockout stage again.
After joining Al-Ahli, Jaissle transformed the side into a leading team in Asia, achieving qualification for the AFC Champions League in his initial season. He leaves the club having led them to back-to-back AFC Champions League titles, becoming the first coach to accomplish this feat. His teams at Al-Ahli were known for their aggressive high press and quick forward play, alongside solid defensive foundations, conceding fewer goals than any other team in the Saudi Pro League last season.

David Hopkinson, Newcastle United’s CEO, welcomed Jaissle, noting his reputation as one of Europe’s most exciting young coaches. Ross Wilson, the club’s sporting director, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing Jaissle’s leadership style and football philosophy as being strongly aligned with the club’s sporting vision. Wilson also highlighted Jaissle’s consistent ability to improve players and create elite performance environments.
Challenges and Expectations at Newcastle
Jaissle faces the task of succeeding Eddie Howe, who led Newcastle out of relegation trouble, secured the EFL Cup in 2025, and achieved multiple Champions League qualifications. However, Newcastle finished 12th last season, and key players such as Alexander Isak, Sandro Tonali, and Anthony Gordon have departed within the last year. Additionally, captain Bruno Guimaraes is reportedly set to join Arsenal.
Jaissle’s remit will involve developing players and enabling the club to outperform those with larger wage bills. Former Salzburg midfielder Zlatko Junuzovic described Jaissle as demanding in training, recalling how he would address players who were not giving their all. Merih Demiral, an Al-Ahli defender, also praised Jaissle’s mentality, noting his unwavering belief in his players even when losing.

Jaissle’s tactical approach often involves a high-pressing 4-4-2 formation when opponents build from the back. His teams also demonstrate an understanding of when to transition into a high press from a mid-block. This aligns with principles previously established under Howe, which could facilitate the players’ adaptation to Jaissle’s methods. However, the Premier League presents a different challenge, requiring adaptability from coaches as tactics evolve rapidly.
Jaissle has already joined Newcastle‘s pre-season training camp in Spain. His first competitive match as head coach is scheduled against Liverpool on Sunday, 23 August.

Jaissle begins his role immediately, and the composition of his coaching team at Newcastle United is expected to be announced shortly.
