Rangers exit Europa League qualifiers after home draw

Rangers have been eliminated from the Europa League qualifiers following a 3-2 aggregate defeat to Jagiellonia Bialystok. The Scottish side drew 1-1 at Ibrox in the second leg, which was not enough to overturn their 2-1 deficit from the first leg in Poland.

Manager Derek McInnes, who joined from Hearts in the summer, has yet to secure a win in four competitive matches since taking charge. The team’s exit from the Europa League means they will now compete in the Conference League playoff round, where they are set to face Jablonec from Czechia.

Second Leg at Ibrox

The second leg at Ibrox saw Rangers captain Lawrence Shankland level the tie on aggregate with a penalty in the 19th minute, providing a moment of optimism for the home crowd. However, Jagiellonia Bialystok equalised in the 65th minute through attacker Nik Prelec. Despite adjustments in formation and personnel, Rangers were unable to regain control of the game.

The match concluded with boos from frustrated fans at Ibrox, reflecting disappointment with the team’s start to the season. The atmosphere at Ibrox was a point of focus for McInnes ahead of the game, as he had urged his players to deliver a strong European performance in front of their home supporters.

Prior to the match, McInnes spoke about the importance of the home atmosphere, noting the impact it had for the opposition in the first leg. He expressed a desire for his team to give the crowd something to rally behind, acknowledging that supporters were eager for a positive result.

The manager had also highlighted the need for his players to commit more bodies into the box and play with increased risk. He mentioned reviewing clips from the first leg to identify areas for improvement, particularly concerning defensive solidity and offensive tempo. McInnes believed that if the team could tighten up defensively, they had the capability to progress in the tie.

Other European Results

Elsewhere in European competition, Hearts also exited the Europa League, drawing 1-1 with Benfica. Tómas Magnússon scored for Hearts in the 77th minute, giving their fans hope for a victory. However, Dodi Lukébakio equalised for the Portuguese side less than a minute later, securing a 7-2 aggregate triumph for Benfica, who had won the first leg 6-1.

Despite their elimination, Hearts‘ performance against Benfica was described as encouraging, especially as Benfica made seven changes from their first-leg lineup. Hearts will now move into the Conference League playoffs, where they are scheduled to face Rapid Vienna of Austria.

Meanwhile, Hibernian secured their place in the Conference League playoff round by defeating Shkendija 2-1 on aggregate. The second leg, played in the heat of the Todor Proeski National Arena, ended in a 0-0 draw. Hibernian manager David Gray praised his players for their “incredible achievement” in securing a clean sheet under challenging conditions.

Gray noted the significance of achieving their first clean sheet of the season against a team that reached the knockout stages of the competition last season. He emphasised the players’ attitude and commitment, stating that they “put our bodies on the line” despite the game not being a brilliant spectacle. Hibernian will now face the Belgian side Gent in the Conference League playoff round.
