Key not surprised by potential Ben Stokes England return
Rob Key, England’s managing director of men’s cricket, has indicated he “wouldn’t be surprised” if Ben Stokes eventually returned to international cricket. Key stated that “anything’s possible with Ben,” despite Stokes’ retirement from international cricket in June.
Stokes, a former captain, made his retirement decision during England’s third Test defeat by New Zealand. He missed the second Test of that series due to an investigation following an incident at a London nightclub, where he breached the team’s midnight curfew. Stokes was later found blameless for the incident, which he said had contributed to his decision to end his England career.
Leadership changes and potential returns
The leadership landscape for England’s Test team has seen changes since Stokes’ retirement. Brendon McCullum has been replaced as Test coach by former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming. Additionally, Joe Root has succeeded Stokes as captain, having previously led the team from 2017 to 2022. Root also captained England in Stokes’ absence during the second Test against New Zealand.
Key mentioned that the door remains open for Stokes to return for next summer’s home Ashes series against Australia. However, Key has not received any indication that Stokes intends to reverse his decision. Former England captain Michael Vaughan suggested that Fleming’s appointment and Root’s return as Test skipper might encourage Stokes to rejoin the England set-up. Vaughan noted Root’s challenge in structuring his team without an all-rounder like Stokes, expressing a glimmer of hope that Stokes might return.

Key confirmed there had been no contact with Stokes regarding a potential return. He reiterated that his relationship with Stokes had not been damaged. Key’s role, he believes, is to secure the best person for the job, which led to Fleming’s appointment.
New coaching era and team development
Stephen Fleming, who has not previously served as a national team head coach, led Chennai Super Kings to five Indian Premier League (IPL) titles over 17 years. Key explained that England narrowed their coaching shortlist before selecting Fleming. Former England coach Andy Flower had ruled himself out of consideration.
According to Key, Fleming’s appointment is intended to help England develop a “world-class team” capable of challenging Australia and sustaining success. Key highlighted that English cricket has historically experienced periods of strong performance followed by declines. He aims to create a system that ensures both success and its continuity, believing Fleming will contribute significantly to this goal.

Root, who made his Test debut in 2012, holds several England Test records, including being their highest run-scorer with 14,114 runs. He is also the second-highest Test run-scorer of all time, behind Sachin Tendulkar. Key stated that Root was among several candidates for the captaincy, and following Fleming’s appointment, it was decided that Root was “the best person to do it.” Key noted Root’s enthusiasm for continuing and refining the work started by Stokes and McCullum.
Fleming’s appointment was confirmed recently, but he will not take charge of England’s Test series against Pakistan in August. He will be in New Zealand with his family before traveling to the United Kingdom next month to prepare for England’s Test tour of South Africa in December. Key disagreed with suggestions that England had wasted a summer of cricket due to these arrangements, asserting that England had appointed the “best two coaches going.”
England, under McCullum and white-ball captain Harry Brook, recently became the number one ranked T20 side globally after a 4-0 series victory over India. Key described this as a “new generation” a year and a half into a project with Brook and McCullum, adding that there is still plenty of time ahead for the Test summer.

The decision to reappoint Root as captain, more than four years after he resigned from the role, was made in consultation with Fleming. Key and Fleming discussed who they believed was the best person for the role at this time. Key acknowledged that when he began his job, he was not fully aware of the challenges Root faced during his previous captaincy, including a series against India, an Ashes series, and dealing with Covid. Key expressed his satisfaction that Root now has the opportunity to captain the side without the previous pressures, working with what he considers to be the best coach. He also mentioned that while Harry Brook had been backed for the captaincy by Stokes and had declared himself ready, it was deemed “too soon” for Brook, who remains in charge of the white-ball teams.
Fleming is expected to arrive in England in September, potentially in time to meet the squad during their final Test of the summer at Edgbaston.
