Vinicius Jr agrees new six-year deal with Real Madrid

Vinicius Jr has agreed to a new six-year contract with Real Madrid, extending his stay at the Bernabéu until 30 June 2032. The Brazil international had entered the final 12 months of his previous deal, leading to speculation about his future.

The 26-year-old winger posted on Instagram, stating, “Eight years at the Bernabéu are too short… Six more years, and then forever.” Real Madrid confirmed the agreement on Thursday, noting that Vinicius Jr has become a pivotal player during a successful period for the club.

Contract Extension and Club Statement

Talks regarding a new deal had reportedly reached an impasse until Real Madrid presented a new offer on Wednesday. Vinicius Jr is understood to have appreciated the fresh terms, which secure his long-term commitment to the Spanish club. Real Madrid and his representatives had been in discussions for the past 18 months.

A club statement read, “Real Madrid and Vinícius Júnior have agreed on the extension of our player’s contract, which links him to the club until 30 June 2032.” The statement highlighted his importance, adding, “Vinicius Jr has become one of the most important players in one of the most successful periods in our history.”

Vinicius Jr joined Real Madrid in July 2018. During his time at the club, he has made 375 appearances across all competitions, scoring 128 goals. He has also contributed to Real Madrid winning 14 titles, including two Champions League titles, three La Liga titles, and one Copa del Rey. His contributions have been described as pivotal due to his gameplay, assists, and goals.

Impact on Transfer Market and Squad Reinforcements

The contract extension for Vinicius Jr has implications for other clubs, particularly Arsenal, who had shown interest in the winger. Arsenal had reportedly considered accelerating their pursuit of the Brazilian if he had not agreed to Real Madrid’s terms. The Premier League champions will now need to explore other options as they seek a left-sided forward.

Vinicius Jr returned to Real Madrid on Monday for his initial pre-season training session and medical assessment following his World Cup campaign with Brazil. He has scored 13 goals in 54 caps for his national team.

The agreement with Vinicius Jr comes on the same day Real Madrid announced the signing of Ivory Coast winger Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig for a fee reported to be worth up to £120m (140m euros). Diomande is the sixth summer signing for Real Madrid under new head coach Jose Mourinho.

Other players who have joined Real Madrid this summer include Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella, and Carlos Espi. Real Madrid is also reportedly targeting Manchester City and Spain midfielder Rodri, but now faces competition from Barcelona for his signature.

Vinicius Jr had hinted at extending his association with Real Madrid during an interview where he spoke about Jose Mourinho wanting him to be “happy” and “joyful” after a challenging period. His commitment to the club aims to help Real Madrid compete for major honours once again under Mourinho.
