West Bengal Election 2026

For the first time, the Bharatiya Janata Party has crossed the majority mark in West Bengal, ending Mamata Banerjee’s long tenure. The elections held in April 2026 saw nearly 68.2 million people casting their votes, resulting in a remarkable voter turnout of about 92.93 percent.

The political landscape had been dominated by Banerjee and her All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) since she founded the party in 1998. Expectations ran high for her continued dominance, but as results poured in on May 4, it became clear that change was afoot.

Key statistics:

  • The BJP won or was leading in 200 out of 294 seats in West Bengal’s legislative assembly elections.
  • Mamata Banerjee’s TMC was leading or had won just 87 seats.
  • The BJP’s previous best performance in West Bengal was 77 seats in 2021.

The decisive moment came as the results indicated that the BJP’s victory stemmed from a combination of factors including religious polarization and anti-incumbency against the TMC. Suvendu Adhikari, a prominent BJP leader, celebrated this shift, stating, “I want to thank every Hindu Sanatani who cast their votes in favour of the BJP.” Meanwhile, Banerjee faced accusations of losing touch with her base, with Seema Das remarking, “Didi has lost the track and only appeases Muslims to stay in power.”

Political analysts weighed in on this historic shift. Praveen Rai noted that this victory “substantially increases the national standing of Modi’s leadership and extends the hegemonic power of the party [BJP] to govern India.” Conversely, Rahul Verma pointed out that while Mamata retains visible support, there is undeniable anti-incumbency against her party machinery.

The Election Commission of India played a controversial role leading up to these elections. They removed over nine million people from the voting list before the elections—a move that drew criticism from the TMC, which accused them of siding with the BJP during voter list revisions. The Modi government deployed 2,400 companies of paramilitary troops for election security, further intensifying the political atmosphere.

The outcome of this election not only reshapes West Bengal’s political dynamics but also poses significant challenges for Mamata Banerjee as she seeks to redefine her position on a national level amidst rising competition from Modi’s BJP.
