Clothes dryer: UK Households Rush to Buy s Amid New Regulations
“Urgent safety check for 85,000 tumble dryers,” warned the Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service as UK households scramble to purchase traditional models before new energy efficiency regulations take effect.
The UK government plans to phase out the sale of less efficient tumble dryers, allowing only those with an Energy Efficiency Index (EEI) of less than 85. Retailers are experiencing a surge in demand, as consumers rush to buy these appliances ahead of the impending ban.
In Northern Ireland, similar restrictions under EU rules have already sparked notable spikes in demand for traditional tumble dryers. With many households looking to secure their appliances, the market is buzzing with activity.
But safety concerns loom large. The Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service has urged residents to stop using affected Haier-manufactured tumble dryers immediately due to a fire risk associated with 85,000 units. They emphasized, “Stop using the appliance immediately and unplug it if possible.” This urgent safety warning adds another layer of complexity to consumer choices.
Despite the risks associated with some brands, switching to heat pump dryers can yield significant savings—approximately £250 over a standard 12-year lifespan compared to conventional models. An average condenser dryer costs around £129.56 annually to operate under current energy price caps.
While the policy does not prohibit the use of existing tumble dryers, it does mark a significant shift in consumer product safety standards. As households navigate these changes, they face tough decisions about balancing cost, efficiency, and safety.
