HMS Raleigh: A New Era for Royal Navy Training
For the first time, all Royal Navy recruits will complete a 10-week Initial Naval Training course at HMS Raleigh starting June 1, 2026. This shift reflects modern operational practices aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of the fleet.
The new approach creates a shared starting point for Officers and Ratings, addressing previous separations in their training pathways. Officers will then progress to a redesigned 14-week commissioning course at Britannia Royal Naval College, ensuring a cohesive transition into leadership roles.
Before this change, the Royal Navy maintained distinct training tracks for Officers and Ratings. The new system aims to eliminate duplication across the training pipeline while preparing recruits for contemporary challenges.
Key facts about the new training system:
- All Royal Navy recruits will undergo 10 weeks of Initial Naval Training at HMS Raleigh.
- Officers will follow a redesigned commissioning course lasting 14 weeks at Britannia Royal Naval College.
- The first officer cadet cohort begins this new initial training phase on June 1, 2026.
This initiative supports the First Sea Lord’s Warfighting Ready by 2029 plan. Rear Admiral Andrew Rose emphasized that “the Royal Navy has always adapted to maintain advantage over emerging threats.” He added that this modernized system strengthens the ability to generate capable leaders.
Captain Andrew Bray echoed these sentiments, stating, “Everyone completing all of our courses must meet the immovable high standard which the Royal Navy demands.” This focus on high standards is critical as the service prepares its personnel for fast-moving and contested environments.
The changes come as the Royal Navy modernizes its training programs to develop warfighting leaders for the future. Notably, there will be no redundancies resulting from this realignment of training pathways.
Britannia Royal Naval College continues to serve as the RN’s leadership training center for officers, maintaining its historical significance since its opening in 1905.
