Kosovo Faces Political Crisis Amid Elections
“We would like to see all political groups cooperate for the best interests of the people of Kosovo,” said a US State Department spokesperson as Kosovo prepares for yet another election on June 7, 2026. The parliament’s recent dissolution, stemming from a failure to elect a new president by the deadline, has thrust the nation into its third election cycle in just over a year.
In the wake of this political crisis, Albin Kurti’s government remains in office on a caretaker basis. Vjosa Osmani had aimed for a second presidential term but found herself without Kurti’s support. The last elections held on December 28, 2025, saw only about 45 percent voter turnout among approximately two million eligible voters.
Key facts:
- Kosovo has faced a prolonged political crisis since February 2025.
- The upcoming election campaign will run from May 28 to June 7, 2026.
- The budget for these early elections is set at €10,887,000.
The ongoing deadlock has raised alarms about institutional trust. “The ongoing political deadlock undermines trust in Kosovo’s institutions,” the US State Department spokesperson noted. This instability not only affects domestic governance but also hinders Kosovo’s EU integration efforts and dialogue with Serbia.
