Chelsea have reached an agreement with Aston Villa for the transfer of England midfielder Morgan Rogers in a deal valued at £117m. This move is set to establish a new transfer record for an English player, surpassing the £116m fee that Manchester City paid for Elliot Anderson earlier this summer. Rogers is also poised to become Chelsea’s most expensive signing in their history, exceeding the £107m spent on Enzo Fernandez in 2023.
The midfielder is expected to sign a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with an option for an additional year. He is scheduled to undergo a medical examination on Monday, following his return from international duty with England at the 2026 World Cup.
Rogers joined Aston Villa from Middlesbrough in February 2024 in a deal initially worth £8m, potentially rising to £15m. Due to a clause in that agreement, Middlesbrough is set to receive at least £20.4m from Rogers’ transfer to Chelsea, depending on activated add-ons. According to one report, Middlesbrough could make a total of £35.8m from the sale of Rogers, with £34.7m of that being profit.

The acquisition of Rogers comes as new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso works to shape his squad ahead of the upcoming Premier League season. This transfer is seen by some as a significant statement of intent from Chelsea, especially after their 10th-placed finish in the Premier League last season, which meant missing out on European football. The move for Rogers was pursued despite Arsenal reportedly making him their top forward target this summer. However, Arsenal was unwilling to match the price agreed by Chelsea. This means Rogers will forgo Champions League football with either Aston Villa or Arsenal to join a team not participating in European competitions next season.
For Aston Villa, the departure of Rogers follows Youri Tielemans’ £35m move to Manchester United. While Villa have brought in Switzerland international Johan Manzambi for more than £50m and lined up Wolves’ Joao Gomes for £38m, the sale of Rogers is considered a significant blow. Rogers scored 21 goals in 85 league appearances for Unai Emery’s side and was part of the team that won the Europa League last season. He scored 14 goals and provided 11 assists in 55 appearances for Villa last season, according to another report.
Squad dynamics and shirt numbers
The arrival of Rogers raises questions about how he will integrate into Chelsea’s squad and the potential impact on players like Cole Palmer. Rogers and Palmer, who progressed through Manchester City’s academy together, are described as best friends in football. Both players are capable of operating in various attacking positions and will compete for playing time with other forwards, including Estevao Willian, Pedro Neto, Jamie Gittens, and fellow summer signing Geovany Quenda.
Rogers was one of three England players chosen for Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad at Palmer’s expense, highlighting similarities in their playing styles. However, they could also play together, depending on the tactical system employed by Alonso, who has used both a back four and back five at his previous clubs.
Regarding shirt numbers at Chelsea, all senior numbers from No1 to No11 are currently taken. Rogers wore No27 at Villa, but that number is occupied by Malo Gusto at Chelsea. Available numbers include No16, vacated by Lesley Ugochukwu, and No17, freed up by Andrey Santos’ £48m move to Manchester United. The No18 is also available, last worn by Christopher Nkunku. Additionally, No22 and No26 are without occupants, with the No26 having been historically associated with central defenders like John Terry.
