Chelsea agree record £117m deal for Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers
Chelsea have reached an agreement with Aston Villa for the transfer of England midfielder Morgan Rogers in a deal valued at £117m. This move is set to establish a new club record for Chelsea and also marks a new transfer record for an English player.
Rogers, who is 23 years old, is expected to sign a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with an additional option for a further year. He is scheduled to undergo a medical examination on Monday, following his return from international duty with England at the 2026 World Cup.
The transfer fee surpasses the £116m paid by Manchester City for Elliot Anderson earlier this summer, making Rogers the most expensive English player. It also exceeds Chelsea’s previous record signing, Enzo Fernandez, who joined for £107m in 2023, and Moises Caicedo, who was signed for £115m in 2023.

The move for Rogers follows the departure of another Villa midfielder, Youri Tielemans, who transferred to Manchester United for £35m. Aston Villa has, however, brought in Switzerland international Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for over £50m and is reportedly targeting Wolves’ Joao Gomes for £38m.
Alonso’s Plans and Squad Dynamics
Xabi Alonso’s involvement was crucial in convincing Rogers to join Chelsea. The new manager’s greater decision-making powers, compared to his predecessors, are evident in this pursuit. Rogers has reportedly been promised regular starts on the left wing, a position that has seen challenges due to Alejandro Garnacho’s form and Jamie Gittens’s injury issues.
Rogers primarily played as a number 10 for Aston Villa, but he acknowledges that his close friend and England teammate, Cole Palmer, has established himself in that role at Chelsea. The two players, who progressed through Manchester City’s academy together, have described each other as best friends in football.
The arrival of Rogers raises questions about how he will integrate into the squad and the potential impact on Cole Palmer. Both players are capable of operating in various attacking positions and will compete for playing time with other forwards, including Estevao Willian, Pedro Neto, Jamie Gittens, and fellow summer signing Geovany Quenda. Alejandro Garnacho is being sold to accommodate these additions.
